    Giveaway

We are loving our botany puzzles from Tower High Learning!!  Now that it’s spring time, I unboxed them and displayed it in our shelves for Mavi to work.  And since we were blessed with beautiful weather for the past days, we can’t help  but pick a few daffodils so we can work with the puzzles and the real ones.

     DSC_0733

Look at how clean the puzzles are and each part fits perfectly well!

Here, I traced the puzzle so Mavi can work on it as a control sheet while adding the labels from Leaf Nomenclature Cards and booklet.

DSC_0806 He reads the definition for each part using our booklet. I made booklets 2 years ago and now he is loving the it!

DSC_0809 After which, he wanted to colour the control sheet.

DSC_0820 We did the same thing for the flower puzzle, and we dissected a daffodil to match each part of the flower :)  Click here for the details for our flower dissecting activity.

    Parts of a Flower

    DSC_0728

Oh I couldn’t resist not having a flower study! Daffodils are just everywhere and knowing me, I just have to grab this opportunity to review our parts of the flower and use our flower puzzle! (My puzzle is from Tower High Learning)

So what to do with all these daffodils that Mavi picked from our backyard? Dissect them!

    DSC_0825

And here’s how we investigated each part.

I get lots of “ooohs” and “aaahs” from Mavi. I love it!

This is how I do it at home and Mavi loves hands-on!

    The Glorious Flight {FIAR}

"This book...recounts the persistence of a Frenchman, Louis Bleriot, to build a flying machine to cross the English Channel.... The text is succinct, caption-like in its directness and brevity....The paintings...add the necessary testure and tone to this marriage. This is vintage Provensen" –School Library Journal

    Glorious Flight

We love this book!  I mean it. It’s funny yet full of lessons from history.  It teaches the reader of never giving up, of persistence and following dreams. And did you know that this book is based on a true story of Louis Bleriot, the first person to fly an airplane in the English Channel.

This is one book that I highly recommend reading when studying airplanes! And you get to study history as well :)

    Geography

    DSC_0462i

Now the setting of the story is in France. So we spot France in our Montessori Europe Puzzle Map and identify the English Channel where Louis Bleriot flew.

    DSC_0443i

in addition, we check out landforms as well, as Mavi was asking me “Mommy, what is a channel?”

    DSC_0466i

Since it is in France, Mavi made the flag of France. I was surprise he still remembers the colours.

    EnglishChannel

And of course, the exciting part was creating the English Channel using our coloured rice, Europe Pin Flags and Learning Resources Transportation counters.

    Math

    DSC_0503i

The book was using Roman Numerals so we made Roman Numerals for each Montessori Number Cards.  This was a huge hit! I even learned from this… the Roman Numerals of thousands!

    RomanNumerals

    Science

We studied Airplanes!  Here are the books we used:

    DSC_0522

They were all helpful!  The only thing that we didn’t do was to have an experiment on flying. Oh well, maybe next time.

Interested in learning the different parts of an airplane? I have FREE 3-part cards for you!

    Airplane Cover

Mavi loves to read and match the parts.  I have yet to create definition booklet for this.  But Mavi knew all the functions of each parts by heart so he was discussing it to me while doing the work.

    Airplane

    History

We created a timeline for the airplane. Starting from the discovery of the Wright brothers up to the very present of airliners (this was Mavi’s idea).

                       DSC_0692 DSC_0705

And that’s about it!  We have a fruitful week for this! I didn’t know that rowing FIAR books could be this exciting and fun!

    Introduction to Multiplication

    Sunday, 5 April 2015

    IntrodMultiplication

Mavi is doing well with Math. He loves to solve problems and create mathematical equations.  Now that he’s confident enough to go to the next level, I started introducing multiplication a few weeks back.

Multiplication is quite overwhelming to a child. But with proper presentation and introduction, it’s as easy as adding 1-2-3, with a little bit of patterning.  Before getting here, I have exposed Mavi to skip counting and addition, thus he was able to grasp the concept and was able to connect the relationship between the three concepts.

Basically, multiplication is just adding the same number multiple times.    I demonstrated this to Mavi using our counters.

Presentation 1:  Fruit Counters and Montessori Beads.   I used multiplication stories or statements as written below.

    Multiplication 1

Presentation 2:  Fish Counters.  Everytime I present something, I keep on repeating our multiplication story (see the text in the image).

multi Presentation 3:  Safari Toob Dinosaurs.  One technique to get your kids interested is to use their favourite toys as well.  Then create multiplication stories, which makes it even more interesting.

    Multi2

So this is just an introductory.  Making sure that Mavi can visualize what happens when you multiply objects and numbers.  After these presentation, we worked on some basic exercises and then proceeded to use the Montessori Multiplication Board (it deserves to have a separate post LOL).

    DSC_0644

The month of April is dedicated to multiplication practice. We’ll be using the board and some beads as well. I do not intend for him to learn and memorize all the tables of multiplication at once.  My ultimate goal here is exposure and understanding the concept, unless he really enjoys it and wills to memorize everything on his own then I won’t stop him for doing so! LOL.

    FREE Airplane Nomenclature Cards

    Friday, 3 April 2015

    Airplane Cover

A few weeks ago,  I made an airplane nomenclature card for Mavi.  The study of airplane was part of our The Glorious Flight row. These cards helped him explore the different parts of an airplane and learn how they function (we used books as reference).

Aside from  the cards which Mavi really loved, we also read lots of airplane books.  These were from the library but you can get a copy of these from Amazon or Book Depository.

Titles of the books (and their affiliate links at no extra cost to you). And don’t forget that when you purchase books from Book Depository, they ship it for FREE!

    DSC_0524

Out of the four books, the Planes and Helicopters was Mavi’s favourite (and mine too!).  It includes a short history of airplanes and describes the different types of aircrafts in general.  I love how Mavi learned a lot just by reading this book!

    Vertebrate Sorting Cards

    Thursday, 2 April 2015

    Vertebrate Sorting copy

Here’s one of my bestseller files, the Vertebrate Sorting Cards!  Mavi loves using the files to create a chart of vertebrate animals.   Six animal pictures for each animal classification.

    Vertebrate Sorting Cards

You can also use animal figures for this. Our animal figures were from Schleich and Safari Toobs
