The Rainbow Clouds Craft

Wednesday, 9 March 2016

I saw this beautiful rainbow craft a few weeks ago in Pinterest and I totally forgot the main site, so please if you own this craft leave a message and I’ll include the credits.

Rainbow

I’ve been introducing Vito to the spring season using our Spring Season Picture Cards, books and outdoor activities.  Today, I’m sharing the rainbow clouds the boys made last week.  The weather was terrible at that time  and we couldn’t explore our yard so I made use of their free time doing crafts at home.  So I tried to scan through Pinterest in search of simple crafts that BOTH of my kids could work on, and this is one of them!

Crafts projects allow children to exercise their fine motor skills, improve manual dexterity and understanding of visual-spatial relationships.  They provide opportunities to use their imagination as well.  Just be vigilant when using small items and sharp objects like scissors.

Materials:

pinayhomeschooler (1 of 1)-4

Procedure:

1.  Pre-cut the white cardstock into a cloud shape.  I made one for each of the boys.  Apply glue on the clouds, and I suggest you provide each kid a glue as they tend to fight over one object when working.  In our case, I just instructed them of what to do, and they’re the ones who executed it. Mostly, Vito follows what his brother is doing Open-mouthed smile

2.  Place a generous amount of cotton.  The fluffiness of the cotton bothers Vito though and he tried to avoid touching the glue as well.

DSC_0234

3.  Apply glue at the bottom side of the cloud for your rainbow.  Place accordingly the strips of coloured cardstock to form a rainbow.  You can demonstrate this to the kids or instruct them of the order of colours if they are not yet familiar with rainbow.

DSC_0238

4.  Strike a pose when they are dry!  See how Vito refuses to strike a pose in the camera LOL.  See what happens when your toddler is camera shy.

                                 DSC_0242DSC_0256

5.  And don’t forget to put  them on display. They look adorable as wall decors and kids love looking at their masterpieces!  The cherry blossom was another project that we made earlier last month and will post the details soon.

  • Chinese Lantern Project for Kids

    Thursday, 4 February 2016

We had a lot of fun today making our Chinese lantern in celebrating Chinese New Year.  Mavi and I did this years ago, and I think he would love to do this again, and of course for Vito to experience.

    DSC_0376

The lanterns that we made were no brainer. They’re so easy to do.  I showed Mavi how to do it and he worked on the rest.   As you can see in the photos, as Mavi cuts his lantern, Vito is also busy doing his scribbling.

    DSC_0325

    DSC_0320

We added some decors on it as well, like star stickers, glitters and some designs.

    DSC_0344

I inserted the tea candles inside the lanterns and this is how they turned out.  It was a good color activity for Vito as well!

    DSC_0401

The boys were fascinated, especially Vito!   Mavi thinks its magical Smile

Happy Chinese New Year to those who are celebrating! It’s the year of the monkey, it’s my year!  More Chinese-themed activites here and here.

    Best Arts & Crafts for Kids and {Learn & Play Link Up}

    Wednesday, 3 February 2016

Years ago, Mavi would do a lot of artist study.  One of my favorites is our Van Gogh project, The Sunflower.  It was one of those rare moment wherein both Mavi and I were in depth with our subject and were absorbed by the beauty of painting.  But it was just more than artwork. We studied the life of Van Gogh, and how his life reflected in his work.  (click the image below for more details)

  • Playing with Colors and {Learn & Play Link Up #3}

    Wednesday, 6 May 2015

Don’t you just love spring? The colors of the flowers brighten up my day.  The beauty of the cherry blossoms never ceases to give me a smile.  Reason why, in this week’s link up, I will talk about the things colors and the things that you can do with it, to see a mood.

Check out some of these fun activities from our previous link up that features the use of colors!

    Linky#3

Featured posts for Playing with Colors this week:

Flower Water Tube Stamping by Montessori on Mars.  Wonderful activity for creating beautiful materials through color mixing using stamps!

Montessori-Inspired Color Activities for Toddlers from Living Montessori Now. A great way to introduce young children to colors.

Learning About Seasons from Planting Peas.  You will see how they use color variations to set the seasons.  Amazing!

Under the Sea Preschool Activities from Natural Beach Living.  I love the use of blue water beads to setup an ocean senosrial tub! The use of colors can definitely simulate a habitat!

Art Appreciation Activities from Every Start is Different. A compilation of art activities for kids!

This week on The Pinay Homeschooler, we create warm and cool colours! Mavi mentioned something like “It’s making summer and winter Mom.”Colours FB

We are doing a lot of artworks at home.  Just the other day, we were looking at the masterpieces of famous artists like Monet and Van Gogh.  We talked about the techniques the artists used and how they set the mood of their paintings.  In particular, we talked about the colours they used during the daytime and night time.  In effect, we ended up talking about warm and cool colours which eventually brought us to this activity.

So Mavi and I practiced mixing paints to create our own warm and cool colours.  He was even more excited that we get to name our own colours!

Warm colours are colours of fire and sun, yellow and colour tones of red and orange.  Can you see the  names of his colours?  Yellow Golden Sun of Heavens and Lobster Bloody Red!Colours1

Cool colours are those of water, violet and colour tones of blue and green.  Love how he created his names:  Gods Light and Coral Sea Blue.

    Colours2

This is a simple activity that you can do with your kids anytime of the day! Less preparation but with much to learn.  Now with this knowledge, we can create paintings with proper mood settings!

By the way, about the coloured tempera paints we are using. The brand is Gouache Liquide Tempera Paints. I am very particular with the paints we use at home because Mavi has asthma.  This brand has negligible smell and I love how strong and vivid the colours are.

So start making you colours now and have fun naming them!

[Ancient Egypt] How to Make a Papyrus

    Friday, 6 February 2015

Oh this one fun activity for Mavi! He could not believe that he actually made paper!  Presenting to you how we made Papyrus out of our parchment paper. This is in line with our Ancient Egypt Study (will have a separate post on this).

    What you need:

    • Glue mixture. (mix 1 cup of flour with 2 cups of water)
    • strips of parchment paper.  You can use anything you like here, but I decided to use parchment to make it more realistic LOL
    • Aluminium foil
    • kitchen towel
    • rolling pin

This was our setup. I covered the area where we’re going to work so it won’t stick in the wooden table.

20150205_171300 Next, let your kid/s dip the strips of parchment paper into the glue mixture and lay it out horizontally. Do this one by one.

    DSC_0152

We laid it out horizontally first, and then the second batch is in a vertical position.  This will give the papyrus a weaved effect. Though we all know that in reality, papyrus was formed by laying out the strips in horizontal position only (stripes!).

         DSC_0155 DSC_0158

Cover the paper with an Aluminium foil and roll a pin to flatten your work. We don’t have a rolling pin at home so we used the cling film roll.  Wipe out the excess mixture.

    DSC_0159

After which, dry them overnight. The wet strips are still delicate so I suggest NOT to remove them from your parchment cover. You can easily remove them later on when they’re dry.

And tada!! This is our papyrus! Ready for us! Mavi suggests we make more later after school :)

DSC_0169 Hope you find this post helpful! Enjoy making your own! And don’t forget to use any kind of paper you want. I saw some using brown paper as well. That’s cool too!

    Colorwheel Flowers

    Wednesday, 19 November 2014

I came across this project at Deep Sparkle and decided to try this with Mavi.  I love how simple the project is and it uses basic colour combinations.  Since the project involves the colorwheel, Mavi and I revisited our basic art lessons about colours a few years ago. We talked about the primary and the secondary colours and how the are organised in a wheel type figure so we can easily remember the colour combinations.

                           DSC_0814_thumb1 DSC_0875[5]

Read about colour theory I and colour theory II.collage

Mavi worked on the red, orange, green and yellow combinations, while I painted a blue-violet flower combination.  And here’s how they looked like after we added  black and white paint details.DSC_0784

    DSC_0788

The flowers turned out really good and the colours were vibrant! You can see these hanging in Mavi’s room as of the moment.

    Pumpkins!

    Friday, 24 October 2014

No, we’re not carving pumpkins this Halloween. First, I don’t have the tools and second, we have no space for them.  So instead we painted pumpkins and stick them on the crystal window of my son as decors!

    Bahay Kubo (Nipa Hut)

    Monday, 18 August 2014

Bahay Kubo is square shaped house with no divisions, just a door and windows.  It is made up of local materials such as wood or bamboo or  nipa grass.  It is a Philippine icon and represents the Filipino culture.  Note that these houses are raised, for proper ventilation I guess since the flooring is made up of bamboo.  Another reason is to avoid the flood.

Yes I have seen Bahay Kubo and have friends and relatives who used to live on this type of house.  Until now, they still exist and I can’t wait to show them to Mavi.  He has always been fascinated with Bahay Kubo. Maybe he can’t imagine how people can live on just a square house.

Thus, I decided to create a model using cardboard boxes from Book Depository.

    bahaykubo copy

There are still people who lives in this stilt houses and I can’t wait to show it to Mavi when we visit the folks this year :)

I cut out the cardboard boxes into strips then stick them on a wooden BBQ skewers.

    DSC_0649

And here’s how the skeleton  looks like when all four sides are attached. DSC_0656

Adding the roof which is made up of cardstock and a wooden ladder here’s the end product.
