Goodnight Moon Storytelling Basket

Oh my, Goodnight Moon is one of my kids favourite books and I can’t wait to share with you the contents of our storytelling basket!  I assembled it over the weekend and both Vito and Mavi are having fun tinkering and exploring the objects. 

I read this book everynight. It’s calming, relaxing… makes them ponder of what’s out there in the night, letting them observe their room and the silence of the night.  And may I just say, there is so much love in the story.  The old lady as I would always say to the boys, is lovingly watching her little kid going to sleep, just like most Mommies do!

So this is our storybasket  where I placed all of our objects and the book. I put this on the top of the shelf. Some of the items here are small so I need to assist and supervise whenever they play with it.  Items here were from the following Playmobil playsets:

• Playmobil Dining Room
• Playmobil Children’s Bedroom
• Playmobil Master Bedroom

The clock was from Amazon, the moon is a DIY, the kittens were from Safari Toob Domestic Cats  and the bears were from Learning Resources counting bears.

Now, we’ve read this book a hundred times LOL. Vito knows this by heart.  So he knows each of the objects in the book and he was quite fascinated that he gets to see them and touch them personaly! Take a look at our three little bears sitting on chairs, the comb, brush and the bowl full of mash!

He obviously loves the bears!

But his favourite of all was the clock! Now I highly suggest that you read the book to your child first.  Give it a week of reading before starting the storytelling basket as there might be times they’ll get distracted of the toys. When that happens, just allow your child to play with it for as long as he wants.

Vito can’t take his eyes from this clock so we have to pause and explore this. We talked about the numbers and hands and he was fascinated!

Papa Get The Moon For Me Storytelling Basket

I am very much inspired by The Imagination Tree of putting up objects as an additional tool for reading.  So I assembled a few objects for Vito’s current favourite book Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me by Eric Carle.  My little guy is so fascinated with the moon and this is the best way we can explore, imagine and learn more about it through interactive reading and storytelling.

This is a story about a little girl who wanted to play with the moon. Her Daddy waited for the moon to get “smaller” until he’s able to bring the moon down from the sky and let his little girl play with it for awhile. 

This is a great way to learn and explore new words for kids as well!  In this story, Vito learned the following:

big and small

the moon (DIY Felt)

the ladder (from Playmobil)

little girl and Daddy (from Playmobil)

cat (from Safari Toob Cat)

the concept of up and down

dance and play

star (glow in the dark)

First we read the book together.  We’ve been reading the book for weeks before I introduced the objects so he knows it by heart already.  I suggest that before adding the objects in your storytelling, read the books first to avoid distractions. 

In between reading, he would take out an object from the basket and match it with the picture.  Mention the name of the object as frequent as you can for retention.  He also started to mimic the actions of the characters in the story through our Daddy and little girl figure.  Can you see him making the Daddy climb the ladder and reach out for the moon?  It helps if you reinact some parts of the story as well!  Like we did climbing up and down and dancing with the moon just the like the characters in the book
