Shark Unit II (FREE Shark Matching and Fact Cards)

The second part (FIRST PART HERE) of the our Sharks study is looking into the different types of sharks, what you need to know about each one and how they differ from each other. With this I used our Sharks Safari Toob and created matching cards for my little boy to play with (he loves matching activities!).  Try to discuss the difference of each sharks basing on their physical features... my son love describing them! 

PS.  I included the Stingray just because it was part of the Sharks Safari Toob BUT of course, it is NOT a shark (they're cousins though LOL).

After we had our Parts of the Sharks activity we review what we have learned by putting labels on our shark picture.   In this, I let him read the labels and guide him (minimal) on where to place them correctly (we use our Shark booklet in describing the parts of the shark).  This is similar to our Grasshoppers activity. 

And here's another activity that integrates reading, this is a printable I got from Teacher Created Resources, Inc.  It's an activity sheet containing shark trivia. 

For writing and spelling practice, I made this writing sheet for my son to trace.  It contains the name of all the names of the sharks we have learned so far.  To encourage him to write, I let him use different colors of writing pens :)

Hope you enjoyed our Shark Unit Study.  My son and I had wonderful time learning about these fierce but lovable creatures :)  We are wrapping up our whales and dolphins so watch out for my post.  If you have a nearby ocean park that features these creatures, it would be best to pay them a visit. Oh how I wish we have them here!

We also watched shark videos of Jonathan Bird's Blue Work.  These were all beautiful to watch! It's like encountering the sharks personally as well :)  Check them out... he has a lot of amazing videos for online learning especially for little kiddos.

Sharks Unit I (FREE Skip Counting Cards)

Sharing with you our Shark Unit (first part).  I bought the figures from Safari Toobs and we've been using it non-stop.

100 Facts on Sharks is a wonderful book for learning all about these creatures.   It got lots of shark pictures and provides fun facts :)           

            

 

We also used my parts of The Shark nomenclature cards and booklet (includes activity sheets). Click the picture for the link.

I love how detailed the shark figures are!  So it was easier for me to show the locations of the fins like the pectoral, anal, pelvic and dorsal.

                 

Coloring materials were downloaded from Education.com and the activity sheet was from my The Shark printable.

The Shark booklet were of great help in learning how each parts of the the shark functions.  My son loves to compare the shark's body parts to his LOL.

A shark puzzle out of cardstock.  What did here was print a shark clipart on a blue paper and cut it in several pieces for him to form it again.  He later on added some drawings like coral reefs and fishes on the completed puzzle to make it look like the shark is in the deep blue waters.

         

For our Math, we've been doing Montessori Math:  Addition Booklets for a while and I am now introducing skip counting.  These Shark skip counting cards are available for free (personal use only).  Please click the picture for the link.

[REPOST] Continent: Australia

EDIT: Thank you so much to my reader Tracy for pointing out incorrect details of my animals. I have already corrected it and updated the link. Caiman doesn't exist in Australia.. and it's actually a mistake. It's supposedly crocodile but I got confused with my animal figures :( And all the while, I thought BBQ ribs originates from Australia and they actually think of it as American food! Thank you so much! I am so happy to learn all of these as well.

My family will be on vacation in the next few days and I have been cramming these days due to preparations. Aside from that we spend most of our days outdoors because of football practice, thus the lack of updates and post.

Last week, we worked on Continents, and the subject was Australia.  Was very happy that I found these books from the library.   My son loved the books for they had a lot of photos that made an impact on my son.  The books provided pictures of the people and the culture of Australia, which was very very important in our unit lesson.

Now the materials I made were:  the maps, flags, postcards and stamps.   I also skipped printing the currency  because my son isn’t interested with it at the moment.

My son also created the Australian flag out of cardstock (with a little assistance from me).  He knows by heart the number of stars on the flag LOL.

I printed cards for the landmarks and foods in Australia.  We were supposed to make Pavlova, but since we’re not really a fan of sweets and pastries, I rejected the thought of making it in order to save time and money :)  Instead, we made BBQ ribs!!

Then he started drawing each cards.  Can you guess each of it?  There’s an alligator(caiman), the boat in the Sydney Opera House, the Cockatoo, a Dingo and an Emu.

We plot the animals on the map where they’re mostly seen in Australia.

   

And to complete our unit lesson, I purchased the Kangaroo Nomenclature Card from Montessori Print Shop. 

The next time we do Australia, I promise to add more materials and age appropriate activities.  For now, I think these are okay :)

Artist Study ~ Vincent Van Gogh (Starry Night)

We concluded our Van Gogh study with Starry Night.  We previously had Sunflowers and my son had a wonderful time painting like Vincent!

We discussed about the colors.  With Sunflowers we were using bright colors... with Starry Night we're using darker shades like blue, violet and black.

Next would be either Seurat or Mondrian. I'm hoping we could do a lot of Artist Study before the school starts this fall.

Marine Animals Available Now!

Hello dear readers! How's everyone doing with their summer vacation? No travels for us this year as we are preparing for some changes that will happen in the next few months :)  Anyway, just wanted to share my new materials for our Ocean Theme this month.  We haven't started yet as I have been experiencing severe migraine due to the heat.  Hopefully, the heat will alleviate a little this week so we can start this unit study.

Artist Study: Vincent Van Gogh

We're doing Vincent Van Gogh this week.  I plan to give "art lesson" every week till the school starts to keep the little one busy as we decided not to let him join Summer Camp this year. 

We have this wonderful book as our reference.

First project:  painting Sunflowers like Van Gogh

Learning how to use big brushes for backgrounds and we talked about the different "strokes" in painting.

 

Here as seen on the picture below, I let him talk about the colors Van Gogh used in his painting.

 

For painting objects, we used small brushes.
