Next week, we'll be looking into the world of Arthropods!

Arthropod

Remember our study of the Animal Kingdom? And the Mollusc (Snail)? We're exploring these animals one by one LOL, familiarizing Mavi of the groups and which animals belong to that group, their differences etc.

So next, we'll have insects, then crustaceans...and so on.

Here are the materials we'll be using for our Insect Study.  I have prepared them already ahead of time so I could save time and we might go back to the park to observe some insects in the pond or do a nature walk around our estate to look for bugs and ants.  If you are interested, click the images below to view details of each material.

Animals and their Habitats (Part One)

Wednesday, 28 May 2014

 habitatAct copy

Objective:  To familiarize with the different biomes of the world and the animals that thrive in each habitat.    To learn the differences of each biome and be able identify their locations in the map.

Materials:

Animal Habitat Cards by Pinay Homeschooler

 Habitat File

A wide variety of animal figures from Safarti Toobs and Schleich.

Procedure:

1.  Presentation of the habitat pictures, map and description of the habitat.  The pictures will give the child an idea how each habitat looks like, the map will give them a visual perspective of how "big" each of the biomes are and their locations.

DSC_0069 copy

I forgot to mention that my son has a fascination with maps. That's the reason why I included the maps in the file as well.  I think it helps him to visualize the planet and what it's made of.

DSC_0156

2.  We took the animal cards and identify the animals of each biome.

3.  Using the cards, we took out his animal figure collections and look for the match of the animals (if we have one).

            DSC_0169  DSC_0197

Now this is my son's favourite activity, the matching and sorting. He loves doing this activity over and over again.

            DSC_0204  DSC_0287

But of course, if you don't have animal figures to go along with this, the 10 animal cards for habitat that goes with the file is more than enough.

And look who joined us in this activity!

  DSC_0295

Our next target his is to see how live in their respective environment, how they adapt and how they "coexist".

Till then!

Vito

Hello everyone! Say hello to the smallest member in our family... Vito. That's his blog name.  I'd like to call him that because unlike his big brother Mavi, Vito is bossy and demanding, like much of a Don LOL.

DSC_0070

Well, our little Don Vito has always been with us during our lessons.  Just sitting there in his Mamas & Papas Baby Snug (Green) , watching, observing and listening to our discussions.

And his big brother loves it that he's around.  Mavi adores him.

DSC_1029

But now that he's in the "curious" stage, I started giving him baby activities, starting with those that can develop his fine motor skills.

And most importantly, I have to train him how to love the outdoors.

Exciting times ahead for our little Don Vito, Mavi and I!

Reading and Writing Numbers

Monday, 26 May 2014

I make it a point to make our Math a little bit interesting for Mavi. Yes, like some kids, he doesn't like Math (yet). So whenever we do Math activities, I try my best to put some twist into it to make it more interesting for him.

For example, this case he's learning how to write and read 3 digit numbers (hundreds). As I mentioned before he has no problem with reading, but writing hundreds and thousands seems off for him.  Like, he writes 324 as 300 24.   So this activity aims to help him practice how to write the numbers properly.

I setup six container box and filled it with the number tiles from our Stamp Game.  I also added a paper strip into it with color coded lines to guide him where to write the hundreds, tens and ones digit (same color with the tiles).

DSC_0080

He's ecstatic to open each box and uncover the total number.

              DSC_0089 DSC_0093

Arranging the tiles per column, he counts the hundreds (red), tens (blue) and ones(green) then write those numbers in the paper strip.  Then we practice reading the number, pointing that the zeroes are left behind.

 DSC_0100

Surprisingly, after finishing the 6th box, he asked if could do more Math.  So I took out our worksheet and work on some addition problems and I made him use our cube links.

 DSC_0108

He has an audience you see.

 DSC_0130

I observed that he only used the links when dealing with big numbers (tens) but otherwise, he uses his hands :)  DSC_0132

And there goes our brief update for our Math activities. I am still planning what to do this June and I promise to share my plans once I'm done.

Animal Habitats Cards

Wednesday, 21 May 2014

Hello readers! I am happy to present to you my latest product and an addition to our favourite learning materials at home.
I am finally publishing our Animal Habitat cards!  This learning material will familiarize the child of the different biomes in the world, and the animals that thrive on that habitat.  What inspired me to create this material is that, my son loves to sort out his animal figures according to the places they live. He would ask me "Mom, does tiger lives in the forest? or savanna?"  And it's pretty much hard to explain at times why certain animals can thrive in the colder regions and how others survive in the desert.  So I made this material so I answer all of my son's questions.
(Click the image for the link)
The file contains the following:
  • 6 pictures of the habitat (desert, temperate deciduous forest, grassland, tundra, taiga, rainforest)
  • 60 picture cards of animals (10 animals for each habitat)
  • The picture cards measure 3 3/4 by 3 1/4
  • Definition card for each habitat.
  • The definition cards measure 6 x 3 1/4
  • Map for each habitat. The maps measure 7 1/2 by 4 1/4.

Here's a glimpse of the material once prepared:
This is the "rainforest" in red.  The picture cards in the file has NO BORDER color.  Because I ran out of white cardstock, I printed my file in an ordinary paper.  To make it sturdy I have to add a cardstock, thus the red border.

Here's a closer look of the map and the definition card.  I know that some of you are using the materials in your class or community school, so I made sure that the picture cards and maps are big and clear enough to be seen in a classroom setup (not just for personal private use).
DSC_0068  And this is a sample of how the picture cards would look like with cardstock borders.
DSC_0072
When my son saw these, he was ecstatic!! He can't wait for tomorrow to work on his picture cards and maps!
So if your kids are on stage of animal obsession, why not try these material and have them explore the animal habitats of the world :)

Molluscs: The Study of Snail (Con't)

Monday, 19 May 2014

snail2

Materials:

We used the same materials as mentioned in my previous post.  Plus...

Mavi's Journal.  This is a sketchpad turned journal.  He writes and draw everything he can think of in this pad.

Playdough.  We used PlayDoh for modeling our snails.

The Snail and the Whale .  This is my son's bedside table book which he borrowed from their school library.  Lovely book to read about saving the whale, traveling around the world encountering different animals and their habitats and a great book to teach rhyming words :)

Activity 1:  Life cycle of a snail.

I printed this out randomly from the web and discuss this with my son.  We previously had Animal Life Cycles so he's very well familiar on how animals reproduce and survive till their adult life.  Seen on the picture below he volunteered to add labels on the pictures.

Activity 2:  Parts of a Snail

We used our nomenclature cards for this activity.  I am a believer of this learning tool.  My son has been using nomenclature cards for 3 years and it has accelerated his reading skills, enhances logical thinking (for matching) and knowledge retention.

DSC_1050

Aside from that, I urged Mavi to record what he has learned in his journal. I want him to keep a journal and learn how to record facts and his daily activities.

             DSC_0038 DSC_0039

Activity 3:  Modeling a snail

We love playdough and the things that we can do with it!  Here, we try to model a snail using our knowledge of its body parts :)

  DSC_0042

Here's my work (left) and Mavi's work is on the right side.

          DSC_0041DSC_0049

Activity 4: How snails behave.

We watched random videos on Youtube to see how snails behave in a close-up manner.

DSC_0065

Most of the activities here are for school-aged children but the nomenclature card is worth a try for preschoolers.  The playdough modeling was a hit.  I can see how my son reviewed the parts of the snail and seriously applied what he had learned in his snail model.   I was hoping if we could explore more of the other types of Molluscs but I decided not to push through.  I'd like to reserve it for some other time when I have enough materials for it.  For now, snail is good enough.

And that's the conclusion of our Snail study folks! This week we'll be having a new topic for our science but I am still undecided what to tackle.  It's going to rain the whole week so we're stuck at home again and these activities make staying at home exciting LOL

Thank you for reading!
